In 2001, the mindset of the Indian retail market was more market and less retail. The dominance of local brands, outdated formats such as garment shops, department stores and multi-branded outlets (MBOs) dominated purchase patterns, offering customers a lackluster shopping experience.
Major Brands (India) Private Limited was one of the first few retail organizations to focus on the retail of premier international brands through the exclusive brand outlets format in India. In a time where price points played a very important role in purchase decision, Major Brands took the Indian retail head on, breaking the price-point barrier with the launch of the Spanish brand Mango in Mumbai.
Perceived to be a privileged brand that catered to class vs. mass, strategic re-pricing and a highly visible promotional campaign repositioned Mango as an affordable brand and increased its customer base.
The success of Mango in India indicated the emergence of India’s growing buying power. This ushered in a slew of other international brands focusing on the Indian market. Major Brands has been the forerunner as the premier partner in India for international brands such as Mango, Aldo, Aldo Accessories, Charles & Keith, Inglot, La Senza, Bebe, Nine West and Promod.
Major Brands now commands a position of an anchor retailer occupying a retail space of over 80,000 sq ft in existing malls and another 87000 sq ft by 2011 as well in upcoming malls for all of our international brands. Our store expansion is a result of our strong, committed long-term relationships with our brands as we provide strong marketing support, consistency, clear direction for product growth, and a true global strategy. WE BROKE BARRIERS TO RAISE THE BAR
2001 Major Brands enters the burgeoning Indian market place with the franchise of the fashionable MANGO store, opening its first store in Crossroads, Mumbai.
2002 Launches Nine West with its first store in Crossroads, Mumbai.
2003 Signs the pan India agreement with ALDO, the largest Canadian footwear retailer and opens its first store at High Street Phoenix, Mumbai.
Ties up with Charles & Keith, Singapore, to open retail stores across India. The first Charles & Keith store opens at InOrbit Mall, Mumbai.
2005 Signs an agreement with La Senza, a prestigious lingerie brand from Canada and opens its first store at Linking Road, Mumbai. Signs French Fast Fashion Brand, PROMOD, for India and launches its first store at Atria Mall, Mumbai, India.
Opens 6 stores of its international brands at Atria Mall, Mumbai.Brand Names: Aldo,Mango,promod,Charles & Keith, La Senza, Nine West.
2006 Enters into Kids Fashion Category with the launch of OKAIDI Kids - French fashion for kids from 0-14 years. The first store opens at Atria Mall, Mumbai.
2007 Opens 15 Stores in NCR viz. Select City Mall in Saket, New Delhi and Ambience Mall at Gurgaon.
Signs 2 new international brands - INGLOT for colour cosmetics and ALDO ACCESSORIES for women’s accessories and jewelry.
2008 Signs 22 stores to open in 2009 and launches its brands in Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad.
2009 Entered Hyderabad & Pune.Marks its entry to new markets like Ludhiana, Ahmedabad and more by signing locations for 2011.
Opened 08 stores of Mango,Promod,Aldo & Charles & Keith in GVK Mall, Hyderabad, DLF Promenade Mall, Delhi, Jewel Square Mall, Pune.
2010 Launches its inhouse brand, Queue Up. Signs new Locations for entry in new as well as existing markets like Chandighar, Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai.
Opens 17 Stores of all 9 international Brands in Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Delhi.
Plans to open 23 more stores by December 2010.
